Cones and rods are types of light-sensitive cell, and are located in the retina of the eye. Cones enable us to distinguish different colours, and there are three different types - each sensitive to either red, blue, or green - rather like the sensors in a colour video camcorder. Cones are comparatively rare in the animal kingdom - most vertebrates have only rods and see only in monochrome.
